The federal opposition has warned Australia's elite Group of Eight universities not to let the 'rivers of gold' they receive from foreign students distract them from their 'fundamental obligation' to educate Australians.

Coalition warns elite universities not to forget 'fundamnetal obligation' to educate Australians in pursuit of 'rivers of gold' from international students

But shadow education minister Sarah Henderson hit back at the Group of Eight on Sunday, telling Sky News Australia's Sunday Agenda that Australian universities would face"further measures" if they ignored their purpose. "They receive many billions of dollars from the taxpayer to do that job, and I think in some cases, they have lost sight of that mission.

Shadow education minister Sarah Henderson said she had heard numerous stories about the number of international students harming the education of Australian students. The Coalition Senator said there were now fewer undergraduate students at the University of Sydney than there were 25 years ago, despite there having been a tenfold increase in the number of international students.

"Australian students are sitting in lecture theatres 75 per cent of the students are foreign," she said.
