Educators will rally against vouchers, advocate for raises Monday on the south steps of the Capitol.
More than 400 educators from across Texas , including a contingent from San Antonio , will travel Monday to the state Capitol to oppose vouchers and advocate for public education and higher teacher salaries.
Northside American Federation of Teachers and the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel plan to have over 60 educators traveling to Austin by bus. A rally with remarks from teachers, students and advocates is set for 2:45 p.m. on the south steps of the Capitol. The group plans to meet with educators to discuss pay, working conditions and public school funding. They’ll also advocate for Texas AFT’s Educator’s Bill of Rights, which includes safe classrooms, manageable class sizes, fair wages, a reliable pension system and increased funding for public education. “Educators will also take a firm stand against private school vouchers, which threaten to divert essential public education funding and undermine any potential school funding boost or educator pay raise,” Northside AFT said in a news release. The Senate approved a bill last month that would give families $10,000 a year per student to fund tuition at an accredited private school, using education savings accounts. But on its website, the Texas AFT says “politicians are peddling voucher schemes that steal dollars from neighborhood schools to bankroll corporate private schools.” Wanda Longoria, former president of Northside AFT, now serving as secretary-treasurer of the statewide teachers’ union, is among the rally’s expected speakers.
