New York Giants rookies Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo starred as their team defeated reigning Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles 34-17. Running back Skattebo ran in three straight touchdowns at MetLife Stadium, becoming only the second Giants rookie to achieve the feat.
DAVID MUNDEE Northside Methodist Academy head football coach Marc Sieving had no illusions about his winless team not being able to match up on Thursday night with Trinity, one of Class 3A, Region 2 top teams.
Still, the quality of play early from his Knights disappointed the first-year head coach. He was a little more pleased with the second half. Trinity, behind four touchdown passes from Land Sharpless, seized a commanding six-touchdown halftime lead with the Knights showing life in the second half before the Wildcats finished off a 49-13 victory over NMA at Rip Hewes Stadium. Trinity improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in region play, while Northside Methodist remained winless at 0-5 overall and in region play. “All of us were disappointed in how we played in the first half,” Sieving said. “A lot of our problems weren’t so much those guys making plays. If they go make a great catch that is something we can deal with. If they have an explosive run, that’s OK. But if we are blowing coverages and giving them free points those are the things we should be better at. People are also reading… “We talked to them at halftime and said, ‘Hey look we are not going to be a team that comes out here and doesn’t play hard.’ I think there was some of that in the first half. The guys responded in the second half.” NMA surges to scoresThe Knights delivered a 10-play, 79-yard scoring drive to open the second half, eating up seven plus minutes. Jeremy Jeffcoat started the drive with a 21-yard run and ended it with a 1-yard touchdown run off the right side of the line. Grayson Barbaree added the point after kick. Jeffcoat was the workhorse in the series, carrying on seven of the plays for 48 yards. Noah Robinson added a 28-yard run to move the ball to the 3 and Jeffcoat scored two plays later. “Granted, they had some of their younger guys in the game, but that’s the type of execution that we are capable of,” Sieving said. “They responded in the second half and played hard. That is something we can build on.” Northside Methodist got the ball back a few plays later as Stetson Chastain pounced on a Wildcat fumble at the Trinity 26. Jeffcoat carried three times for 25 yards, highlighted by a 17-yard run around left him, pushing the ball to the 1. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Isaac Sullivan scored off the left side from a yard out. The extra point kick was missed. Trinity dominates earlyWhile the third quarter belonged to the Knights, the first two quarters were all Wildcats. Trinity scored twice in the game’s first four minutes for a quick 14-0 advantage. Sharpless completed a 4-yard TD pass to Chapman McInnis on the first drive. After recovering an onsides kick, Sharpless fired a 51-yard TD strike to Max Vaughn after a Northside Methodist defender fell down. Drew Sanders scored on a 3-yard midway in the first quarter and Sharpless threw a 40 -yard TD pass to William Hughes with 30 seconds left in the opening period to make it 28-0. Midway in the second quarter, Brandon Boswell took a screen pass 51 yards to the end zone. Late in the half, Sharpless connected down the middle of the field on a 26-yard strike to Mackin Roth, making it 42-0. The Wildcats added their final score in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run by Tristan Wright that was set up by a long kick return after the second NMA touchdown.
