Are you ready to see about 50-75 “shooting stars” per hour just as the northern lights are predicted give a rare display at lower latitudes? Time it right—and get away from light pollution—and you could experience the rare double-header as the annual, G2 geomagnetic storms could be sparked on Aug. 9, 10 and 11 in the wake of coronal mass ejections from the sun earlier in the week.reports that the solar storms could be as strong as G3, which would mean aurora possibly as far south into the U.S.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to see two of the most beautiful all-sky sights it’s possible to see—together! The Perseids meteor shower can be experienced anytime between July 14 and September 1, but it’s the peak night you want to prioritize. There isn’t a hard-and-fast peak time you need to think about because the peak lasts about 16 hours, but there are double the number of “shooting stars” per hour during the peak night.

That makes after sunset on Sunday, Aug. 11 as the key time to be somewhere away from light pollution to stand a chance of seeing both “shooting stars” and the aurora borealis together.During the shower, small rocks and sand grain-sized particles strike Earth’s atmosphere at about 37 miles per second. As they hit the atmosphere, they charge up, shedding energy as photons that we see as streaks of light in the night sky.

However, waiting until midnight is only wise if conditions are ideal; if there is the possibility of clouds later, make the most of any clear sky you can get on the peak night. As a bonus, looking at the northern and eastern horizon immediately after sunset may bag you a glimpse of an “Earthgrazer,” a meteor that appears to strike the atmosphere close to the horizon. They can be quite a sight.
