Chrysta Willis from Cleveland experienced a chilling phone call where the caller impersonated her grandson, claiming he was involved in an accident and needed $5,000 bond.

Despite her suspicions, the caller's urgency and emotional pleas nearly swayed Willis. Recognizing the scam's tactics, she refused to comply and sought clarification.Ericka Dilworth, VP of Operations at the Cleveland Better Business Bureau, highlights the prevalence of imposter scams, advising individuals to avoid answering unfamiliar calls. If a call is answered, she recommends obtaining a callback number, ending the conversation, and taking time to assess the situation. Dilworth emphasizes the urgency scammers employ to pressure victims into making quick decisions without proper consideration. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost encourages victims to report scams, assuring them that seeking justice will not reflect negatively on their ability to live independently. He acknowledges the shame and fear that prevent some victims from coming forward and vows to protect them. Dilworth stresses the importance of reporting scams to aid in preventing future incidents and potentially assist victims. Willis, a Community Outreach Coordinator with the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging (WRAAA), plays an active role in educating seniors about scams. She and the WRAAA, a partner with the Cuyahoga County Scam Squad, provide valuable resources and guidance to seniors who may have encountered or are at risk of falling victim to scams. Willis emphasizes the availability of support and encourages seniors to seek help when needed
