While the winter storm has moved through, frigid temperatures are expected to persist for the next five days in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. A return to normal temperatures is anticipated later in the week, but residents should continue to take precautions against the cold.
The winter storm has passed, but the chill is set to linger for the next five days. Many are eager to know when the freezing temperatures will finally end after the prolonged cold snap experienced in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia during January. While this January might not be the coldest on record, it certainly feels that way. Jacksonville, Florida, experienced its coldest day ever on January 21, 1985, with a temperature of 7 degrees.
This January has already seen nine days with temperatures at or below freezing. Looking ahead to the final week of January, a return to normal temperatures is predicted for Monday, January 27th. The forecast anticipates a high of 65 degrees and a low of 42 degrees, just slightly below the normal. This trend is expected to continue through Tuesday. Some sources even suggest that temperatures could reach the 70s by mid-week. However, residents should not discard their plant covers just yet. At least four more mornings of freezing temperatures are anticipated between now and Monday, with daytime highs remaining mostly in the 40s until at least Saturday. Although weekend highs will be pleasant, and the sunshine will be welcome, mornings will remain cold and hazardous. An inland hard freeze is likely on Friday and Saturday mornings. It's crucial to continue practicing safety precautions for people, pets, pipes, plants, and fire safety. Dangerous wind chill factors remain a concern, with Freeze Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories in effect for parts of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia from 7 p.m. Wednesday evening until 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The National Weather Service warns of sub-freezing temperatures as low as 19 degrees for the Freeze Warning area and wind chills as low as 15 degrees for the Cold Weather Advisory area
