Breaking: Embattled North Texas GOP Rep. Bryan Slaton resigned on Monday, on the eve of a scheduled House vote on whether he should be expelled for inappropriate sexual conduct with a 19-year-old legislative aide.

On Monday, the door was locked at Slaton’s Capitol office. Since Saturday, he has not returned messages seeking comment on the investigative panel’s recommendation that he be the first House member to be expelled since 1927.

“No apology to the young woman he violated, his wife whom he betrayed or his district that he failed. … No remorse,” said Toth, one of two House Freedom Caucus members to immediately call for Slaton to resign after the scandal broke. “No acceptance of responsibility. He’s the victim that rides off in to the sunset. That was the resignation of a narcissist.”

“The misconduct described in the General Investigative Committee Report should never be tolerated and is proper grounds for expulsion,” Rinaldi said in a written statement. Under the state Constitution, lawmakers may be expelled for “disorderly conduct.” Each chamber is left to define what constitutes such conduct.
