What will the commission advocate for this legislative session on behalf of North Texas?

Higher education

While funding for K-12 public schools occurs on a local level, funding for most public universities and other higher-education institutions takes place on the state level, making it even more critical to appeal for state funding. Dr. John Burruss, CEO of mental health service provider Metrocare Services, said that, while mental health infrastructure may exist in urban areas, there aren’t nearly enough people to operate the facilities. Health care workers are often pushed into early retirement or different career paths because of the exhaustion and trauma they face in their jobs.

“Every time somebody moves here, every time somebody is born here, every one of them is going to need health care of some kind, and a huge portion of them are going to need mental health care,” Burruss said.In order to spur job creation, commission CEO Chris Wallace said the group will support workforce programs and the passage of a comprehensive nondiscrimination law during the state’s next legislative session.
