The church removed a 52-year-old condemnation of homosexuality in its official declarations of social principles and broadened its definition of marriage.
Delegates at the General Conference in Charlotte, N.C., also voted to redefine the church’s stance on marriage, which is now described as a sacred covenant between “two people of faith.” The revised social principles passed by a 523-161 vote.Eric Folkerth, senior pastor of Kessler Park United Methodist Church, watched a livestream of the vote at his church with a group of pastors and laypeople.
The new definition of marriage was approved after a lengthy debate and compromise amendment that revealed tensions between some U.S. and international delegates, “Folks, we need to bless them and look forward. Yes, they are making the decisions that we warned about, but that is why we all left,” one wrote.In a press release Wednesday, the Global Methodist Church said it “is aware of recent decisions made by the General Conference of The United Methodist Church with respect to its definition of marriage and its ordination standards.
