North Texans prepare for more 100-degree days as summer heats up

With a series of consecutive days above 100 degrees, Dallas’ homeless population of around 10,000 are heightened risk from the extreme heat.

Here’s what to do and how to help people experiencing homelessness who are at increased risk of heat-related illnesses.The late-summer heat in Texas is on the rise and we can expect even hotter temperatures as the weekend approaches.About 14 days have reached at least 100 degrees this year, fewer than at this time last year, as of Aug. 14.

“We have actually seen a huge increase this summer in the amount of people, with 350-450 people a day,” Hendricksen said. “And right now, during our extended hours, 70-80 people are staying for our extended hours. Most of them are elderly.” OurCalling will provide water, snacks and other essential supplies. Additionally, 1,000 meals are served for lunch and 100 meals are served at a 5 p.m. dinner during extended hours.OurCalling encourages the community to donate water bottles, since high temperatures have cut into the nonprofit’s monthly budget for supplies.“We have people who are going out on the streets, reaching out to people in need from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Hendricksen said.
