On Thursday, the Politburo of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party passed a resolution to implement a maximum emergency anti-epidemic system, as it reported its first-ever local Covid-19 case. Since the start of the pandemic, North Korea has claimed it had zero Covid-19 cases despite having tested tens of thousands of people.
Mr. Kim faces food shortages and an economy hit hard by border closures and U.S.-led sanctions. Despite facing tough domestic challenges, developing its weapons program will remain a priority for Mr. Kim, North Korea watchers say. The U.S. has circulated a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council seeking additional sanctions against North Korea for its tests this year. During a Wednesday meeting to discuss Pyongyang’s recent missile provocations, the U.S. and other countries condemned the North for its actions, but faced opposition from China and Russia.
