North Korea said Thursday that it had successfully test-fired a new submarine-launched ballistic missile off its east coast, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.

Doug StanglinNorth Korea said Thursday that it had successfully test-fired a new submarine-launched ballistic missile off its east coast, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

The missile was reportedly launched from a platform at sea rather than from a submarine, according to the BBC.South Korea’s military said the missile traveled about 280 miles at a maximum altitude of 565 miles, or more than twice as high as the orbiting International Space Station. President Donald Trump, who did not comment on the latest launch, has played down the North's previous weapons tests involving short-range projectiles. He has said the North Korean leader has not broken an agreement made in the U.S.-North Korean summit in June last year.

If fired at a standard trajectory, the missile could have traveled 930 to 1,240 miles, said Kim Dong-yub, an analyst from Seoul’s Institute for Far Eastern Studies, in a Facebook post, according to the Associated Press.
