Japan and South Korea both condemned the launches as violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions, and Japan said it had lodged a protest through its embassy in Beijing. On Friday, North Korea threatened “unprecedently” strong action against the U.S. and South Korea over planned joint military exercises. The next day, the North fired a Hwasong-15 ICBM in what it called a “sudden launching drill.”
