Travis King had been punished for misconduct while serving in South Korea and was being sent home to the United States when he crossed the border.
SEOUL — North Korea has decided to deport Travis King, a U.S. soldier who crossed into the North in July, after determining he had illegally entered the country, Pyongyang announced Wednesday. It claimed that King “confessed that he illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK,” the formal abbreviation for North Korea.
King had been punished for misconduct while serving in South Korea and was being sent home to the United States. Instead, he joined a civilian tour of the Joint Security Area in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Last month, North Korea claimed King told investigators that he decided to cross into North Korea because of his “ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. Army.”
