This is how we lose these cherished freedoms — one religious zealot at a time

Re “A North County school district quietly pulled books, shut down libraries after a parent complained. Its policy dictates otherwise” : I find it incredibly disturbing that this religiously tinged attempt at censorship occurred under the guise of “freedom of speech.” The parent who got the targeted book banned said it would cancel “the rights of ... young children to be children and my rights as a parent to guide my children regarding such things.

” She said the book “goes against my Christian beliefs” and “should not be in any library.” The irony here is clear: “Freedom of speech” has been completely turned on its head, where one random person determines what books should be banned, then asserts she is exercising her “freedom of speech.” However, the most disturbing part of this story was that this travesty circumvented the clear district policy that should prevent this kind of subversion. . I hope this “end run” is overturned. M.
