North Carolina General Assembly leaders say they’re prepared to approve initial disaster relief next week. House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger said in a Friday news release that they're still working out the details of exactly what's needed to address the damage from Hurricane Helene.

North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, speaks to reporters on the House floor at the Legislative Building in Raleigh, North Carolina , on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024. With a House vote earlier Wednesday, the General Assembly gave final approval to a measure that would do away with a large waitlist for private school vouchers and direct sheriffs to assist federal immigration agents seeking to take jail inmates into custody. President Joe Biden shakes hands with Gov. Roy Cooper, D-N.C.

Damage in the mountains is still being evaluated, so lawmakers expect to this legislation will include just a down payment on the state’s contribution, along with other changes to state law that would provide flexibility to agencies and displaced residents. The state government currently has $4.75 billion set aside in a “rainy-day” fund and $733 million in a disaster response reserve. Other pots of money could be tapped if needed.

“We have to begin planning for the long term recovery, which will take time,” House Minority Leader Robert Reives of Chatham County said in a release.
