North Carolina GOP Files Ethics Complaint Over Description of Its Abortion Views

Three Republicans in the North Carolina Legislature have filed an ethics complaint against state Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs, a former civil rights lawyer who is running for reelection. Did sheafter refusing to recuse in the case, as her colleague has repeatedly done? No. Did she, as a Republican justice did,whose stock she owns? No. Her alleged offense was talking about reproductive rights on the campaign trail and calling out her opponent for declaring that “life begins at conception.

But Republicans may have a different goal in mind with Riggs. They might be hoping that this unfounded ethics investigation will make it harder for her to keep her seat in the ongoing election. The Republican-aligned Carolina JournalRepublicans, who have made North Carolina’s judicial elections partisan and more politicized, are upset that Riggs is talking about issues that matter to voters.

The first step was Newby firing the former head of the JSC, because she had reminded judges that under ethics rules, they’re notLawmakers also reshaped the JSC in its budget last year, giving themselves and Newby more control. After the election, lawmakers could try to follow through on their implicit threat of impeaching Riggs.
