The National Weather Service in Huntsville said the radar, known as the KHTX WSR-88D, will be down for about two weeks while undergoing an upgrade to extend its life. But north Alabama won’t be left in the dark. The weather service said nearby radars will be available, including KGWX , KBMX , KFFC and KOHX .The KHTX radar is operated by the weather service in Huntsville but actually located to the east in Jackson County. It will be getting a new pedestal to rest on. That’s a big job that will require a crane, according to the weather service.The latest upgrade is part of an eight-year, $135 million, nationwide radar-refurbishing process led by NOAA, the U.S.
Work has already been done on the KHTX radar, the weather service said, including installing a new signal processor and retooling the transmitter. The final step in the project, set to be completed by 2023, will be refurbishing the radar’s equipment shelters.While rain will be an on-and-off factor in the forecast this week, there is no organized risk for severe weather in north Alabama, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
