Hurricane Norma rapidly intensified into a major hurricane over the East Pacific Wednesday into Thursday morning, as accurately predicted by AccuWeather meteorologists.
The monster hurricane, which underwent rapid strengthening, will lose wind intensity but will still be a formidable hurricane as it slams into Mexico. It may also aid in fueling heavy rain in the bone-dry central U.S.The hurricane, located over the eastern Pacific Ocean, is predicted to make landfall in Mexico early next week before fueling rainfall over part of the central United States.
It's really a wait-and-see situation, Lundberg added. AccuWeather meteorologists will watch the jet stream's behavior over the western U.S. this weekend to determine Norma's next move. AccuWeather meteorologists have rated Hurricane Norma as “2” on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes, which is a six-point scale ranging from “less than one” and 1 to 5, for Mexico.
"There should be enough of a jet stream dip to help pull some Gulf of Mexico moisture northward," Lundberg said."But, how dynamic that is will depend on the jet stream dip intensity and whether or not some of Norma's moisture and energy are also involved."
