Another train derailment in Ohio.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A Norfolk Southern train derailed in the western Ohio city of Springfield on Saturday, with 20 to 30 cars reported off the tracks, but railroad officials said none involved hazardous materials.
Residents within 1,000 feet of the derailment were asked by Clark County Emergency Management Agency officials to sheldter in place out of precaution,Norfolk Southern told the newspaper that no hazardous materials were involved and there were no injuries.It was a Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, Feb. 3, leading to a multi-day evacaution of the city.
Five rail cars carrying a total of 115,580 gallons of vinyl chloride were among those that went off the tracks in East Palestine,Two days after the derailment, a rise in temperature inside one of the cars, “suggested that the vinyl chloride was undergoing a polymerization reaction, which could pose an explosion hazard,” according to the report. In response, the tank cars were vented the following day to release the chemical and burn it.
The fiery release of chemicals fouled the air, soil and water in and around East Palestine, with a population of about 5,000 people. Other hazardous chemicals were also released during the derailment were. Butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether were or continue to be released in the air, soil, and/or surface waters, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
