The fitness tracking market is dominated by subscription services like Whoop, Oura, and Fitbit, but a new open-source application called Noop aims to provide a free and privacy-focused alternative for Whoop Band owners.
Unlike the official Whoop app, which requires a recurring subscription after an initial hardware and service package, Noop operates entirely offline, stores all user data locally in an SQLite database, and does not require any account creation. This approach not only eliminates monthly fees but also ensures that personal health information never leaves the user's device, addressing growing concerns about data privacy.
Noop works by reverse-engineering the communication protocol of the Whoop Band, allowing it to sync directly with the wearable without using Whoop's cloud services. Once connected, the app collects real-time data on heart rate, sleep quality, recovery status, and daily strain-metrics typically reserved for paying Whoop subscribers. Over the first few days, Noop builds a comprehensive profile before delivering insights similar to Whoop's analysis, such as readiness for intense workouts and optimal sleep duration.
Additionally, Noop extends functionality beyond the official app by enabling features like locking a Mac with a double-tap on the band or detecting when the device is removed. The developer of Noop emphasizes that the app is fully legal, as it contains no Whoop code, firmware, or digital rights management circumvention tools.
However, the reverse-engineering process may still present legal ambiguities depending on jurisdiction and specific terms of service violations. Importantly, Noop does not bypass the initial hardware acquisition cost; users must still obtain a Whoop Band through official channels. Yet, once in hand, the band can be used indefinitely with Noop without ever paying a subscription, making it an attractive option for users frustrated with the recurring fees.
