A nonprofit is turning the former Republic Golf Club on San Antonio's South Side into an arboretum with a variety of trees and plants.
The organization leading the conversion of the closed Republic Golf Club into an arboretum on the South Side wants residents to weigh in on possible designs for the attraction. Arboretum San Antonio hired architecture and design firm Sasaki to work on a master plan for the 188-acre arboretum, a garden that will be dedicated to showcasing regional trees and other plants.
County OKs $7.3 million for South Side arboretum being developed in partnership with Brooks All the designs include a network of trails connected to the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System and an 18-acre parcel owned by Bexar County with play stations, water features and education components for children. The first concept, dubbed “Community Cross Roads,” depicts the arboretum as a place with ample educational, recreational and cultural activities.
Ayala: Henry Cisneros imagines a 'cathedral of trees' in a South Side arboretum A plan shows tree and retail nurseries and an area devoted to food production near the entrance off Emory Oak Drive, with a canopy walk along the creek. It also depicts a small conference facility and a visitor center with indoor and outdoor classrooms and research greenhouses, cabins and campsites, research fields and a restaurant with food grown on-site.
At the former Brooks Air Force Base, a metamorphosis is nearly complete. Or is it? Former Mayor Henry Cisneros formed Arboretum San Antonio to spearhead the project. The Brooks Development Authority bought about 158.5 acres of the golf course from Republic Golf Club Ltd. for $1 million and is leasing it to Arboretum San Antonio. Most of that land is in a flood plain. Arboretum San Antonio bought another 17.9 acres that are outside the flood plain from Republic Golf Club Ltd.
