The rise of non-alcoholic drinks is changing how people celebrate, with options ranging from sparkling wines to craft beers and even celebrity-backed brands.
Celebrating without booze is easier thanks to shops like Beyond the Bar, drinks like Community Beer’s Nada and lounges like Double D’s. The plastic cups of bubbly hoisted in the air may look unremarkable, but this is a paradigm shift in plain sight. A group of people who have chosen not to drink alcohol — for health reasons, or faith reasons, or because they’re pregnant, or in recovery — participating in the boozy ritual that has long defined the New Year. About 30% of Americans don’t drink alcohol, and until fairly recently, the booze industry mostly ignored them. The past years brought an attitude change and a flood of products. Some imitate familiar tastes, like Phony Negroni, and some are sui generis, like the bittersweet Pathfinder or the citrusy-ginger Tenneyson (based in Austin). There are celebrity brands like Tom Holland’s Bero and Danny Trejo’s tequila and gin alternative, Trejo’s Spirits, and niche brands like KittiePig, the first NA drink designed for the hard-core metal scene.
