Kristi Noem , the South Dakota governor, faces a confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs for her nomination as Secretary of Homeland Security . Noem, a former Congresswoman and daughter of a farmer, gained national attention during the pandemic for her stance on keeping the state open, including hosting a Fourth of July fireworks show at Mount Rushmore. 'We didn't mandate anything,' Noem stated at the 2024 Republican National Convention.
'We never ordered a single business or church to close. I never even defined what an essential business was, because I don't believe that the government has the authority to tell you that your business isn't essential.'Noem's recent achievements as governor include progress on the state economy, education, and public safety, as highlighted in her December budget address. She also deployed National Guardsmen to the southern border, assisting Texas' National Guard efforts.
