Police say it is unlikely there are any survivors from a crash between a truck and a car that triggered a fire 1100 kilometres northeast of Perth in the WA’s Pilbara Region. A prime mover carrying a “significant amount” of ammonium nitrate and the car collided on the Great Northern Hwy in Karijini about 3.30pm on Tuesday, with police saying “both the truck and car were incinerated”. “It is not believed there are any survivors of the crash at this time,” authorities said.
spokesperson said. “Crews are undertaking a further assessment this morning.” Ammonium nitrate is a chemical used in fertiliser and explosives. A two-kilometre exclusion zone was established on Tuesday and remains in place “for the safety of the public and emergency services personnel”. A HAZMAT warning was also issued for “potentially dangerous smoke”. “People should stay away from the area. If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel,” the alert warned.
officers and volunteer firefighters are at the scene, supported by a number of government agencies and emergency management teams. Major Crash will attend the scene and investigate the circumstances of the crash once the area has been deemed safe.
