No recommendation in Texas’ 4th Congressional District | Opinion
2:00 AM on Oct 16, 2022 CDTTwo years ago we endorsed Pat Fallon, 54, who is finishing his first term as the representative for this district, based on his previous public service and his support for limited government, low taxes, personal responsibility and property rights. But he lost our confidence with his vote to object to the presidential election results after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
We are troubled by other stances Fallon has taken since. He was one of several leading Texas GOP politicians who recently filed an unsuccessful petition with the Texas Supreme Court to have Libertarians expelled from the ballot. And instead of focusing on his constituents in Northeast Texas, he made it a point to go to Wyoming this summer to campaign against his Republican colleague Liz Cheney because of her desire to hold former President Donald Trump accountable for Jan. 6.
After the Uvalde massacre, Fallon blamed social media and the “noticeable breakdown of the family” to distract from an important debate about how to address gun violence. What a failure of political courage and leadership. His Democratic challenger, Iro Omere, 37, is not a serious candidate. The North Texas native is an education consultant who has no government experience. Two years ago, she tried and failed to get on a congressional ballot in New York, telling us that she couldn’t get the required signatures because of pandemic restrictions.
Omere is campaigning on improving public education and health care but had little to offer in terms of policy ideas. And she is well to the left of most Texans. For example, she opposes any government restrictions on abortion. We welcome your thoughts in a letter to the editor. See the guidelines and
