The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is not keen on recommending a government takeover and closure of Siargao Island to tourism to pave the way for a massive rehabilitation similar to what was imposed during the rehabilitation of the world-renowned Boracay Island during the Duterte administration.

“After 3 years of pandemic and the devastation of typhoon Odette, it is time for the people to recover from several years of economic setbacks. Closing the island to tourists will definitely hurt them more,” Tamayo said. He noted that close to 1,000 tourism-related establishments on Siargao Island, or close to half of the total number of businesses operating on the island, have no environmental compliance certificate .
