'No Mow May' is an informal movement to refrain from mowing the lawn for the entire month of May. The theory is that allowing weeds to grow and flower will make more pollen available to feed pollinators during a time of year when little else is in bloom.

. Violations for tall grass will not be issued this month, and the City “will also restrict mowing on public properties and roadway medians.”

On the one hand are turf purists who think anything but a pristine green lawn signifies a neighborhood on the brink of ruin. At the other end are ecological purists, who view lawns as an environmental dead zone but see dandelions as an invasive non-native plant that has no place in the American landscape. Dandelions and other invasive weeds are not the right food for native pollinators, and they fear No Mow May is another misguided feel-good campaign that will end up doing more harm than good.

When faced with two extremes, the zen thing to do is to find “the middle way.” There are lots of dandelions in some yards, as well as in parks, medians, and cemeteries. Instead of seeing them as a sign that the area is downtrodden, I see it as a sign that herbicides are not being used because someone chose to use that time and money elsewhere or is worried that we might not understand the full impacts of their use.
