The Tennessee Capitol is seen, Jan. 22, 2024, in Nashville, Tenn. The Republican-led Tennessee House advanced a proposal Thursday, March 14, that would require law enforcement agencies in the state to communicate with federal immigration authorities if they discover people …The bill aims to close a loophole dating back six decades. In 1960, the Tennessee attorney general wrote an opinion on an 1829 law that had wording allowing first cousins to marry.

The bill passed with 75 voting yes, nine being present but not voting, and two voting no. One of those people, Rep. Gino Bulso, a Republican, proposed an amendment to the bill, which would have let first cousins marry if they saw a genetic counselor. He also argued that the U.S. Supreme Court precedent in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized gay marriage, allows for cousin marriage.
