“They will try many or all of them but a vibrant democracy that is a medium power believing it enjoys the support of a superpower does not surrender,” Steve Tsang, the eminent historian of modern China, told. “So, there is no alternative for Xi but put boots on the ground if he wants to take over Taiwan. Invasion is thus always the ultimate outcome, if deterrence should fail.”

He noted that invading Taiwan has historically been seen by many experts as one of the most difficult undertakings for any military. The US considered it during the Pacific War and at the start of the 50s but decided it would exact too high a price. The US, through the Taiwan Relations Act, is legally obligated to provide Taiwan with defensive weaponry, but not join in the fight.
