It seems like San Antonians have a puro way with words. Chicano accents ranked in the top half of America ’s most attractive and desirable in 2023, according to a study from online language learning platform Preply . Southern accents took the top spot, Texan accents sat at fifth place, and Chicano accents ranked at No. 12. Some people like the way the Chicano accent sounds because of its “rhythmic flow and expressive intonation,” the study says.
So, if you're from here, or even if you've visited, you probably already know what it sounds like. While Chicano accents have typically been viewed in mainstream American culture as “improper” English, Fought told PBS it’s a “mistake” to “characterize Chicano English as ‘learner English,’ somehow imperfect and non-native.
