AUSTIN — In the aftermath of Wednesday’s letdown at TCU, which officially ended Texas’ Big 12 title chase, interim coach Rodney Terry said there wasn’t “a dry eye in the locker room.”
The Longhorns put on a rip-roaring show of force against No. 3 Kansas, which earlier this week claimed the outright Big 12 title once again thanks to what happened up in Fort Worth. While Texas had squandered its chance to play for a share of the league crown after two straight losses, it treated the regular-season finale against the Jayhawks like a prize fight it desperately needed to win.
Fifth-year senior forward Timmy Allen knotted the score at 2-2 three minutes in. After that, Texas took off. Texas made life miserable for most of the Jayhawks on Saturday afternoon. Only star forward Jalen Wilson scored in double figures, finishing with 23 points on 7-of-18 shooting with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Speaking of those Texas guards, Carr, Hunter and graduate guard Sir’Jabari Rice put on a show on both ends, the latter two in particular. Early in the first half, Rice finished an and-1 finger roll layup then implored the crowd to get off their behinds — they obliged. After he blocked one shot out of bounds in the second half, Rice high-fived a random Texas fan sitting along the baseline. And after he sealed the game with a one-legged Dirk Nowitzki-esque fallaway with 3:30 to go, he grinned all the way back downcourt as the Moody Center erupted again.
