CLEVELAND, Ohio — Riverside, coming off a Division Il regional semifinalist performance last season, began 2023 in good fashion, defeating Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, 14-3, Friday night on the road.
The Beavers , ranked No. 9 in the cleveland.com preseason Top 25, were led by senior quarterback Mikey Maloney and senior running back Sam Salminen, who each scored rushing touchdowns. They will host No. 14 Aurora , a 14-7 winner over Twinsburg, next Friday night in a must-see nonconference matchup. Maloney gave Riverside an early 7-0 lead on a rushing touchdown. But penalties and self-inflicted wounds prevented the Beavers from doing any more damage in the first half. A holding penalty wiped out a would-be touchdown run, and NDCL got an interception off of a bobbled pass on the next play. A penalty wiped out another touchdown from Maloney to senior Brady McKnight.
