The Broncos may be short-handed after two starters left their last game injured, but San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher is preparing for them just the same
San Diego State fans aren’t the only ones who poke their heads outside to see if the sky is falling after a loss by the men’s basketball team.The Aztecs coaches emerged for practice Thursday afternoon, two days after a 75-66 loss at Nevada and a day before Friday night’s first-place showdown against Boise State at Viejas Arena . The players stayed behind, holding a closed-door meeting to refocus their season while the coaches milled around on the court.
There are still seven conference games remaining after this one, so it’s a bit early to be labeling anything a “must-win” affair. In some respects, though, it might be. Boise State ended one prodigious win streak by the Aztecs, an incomprehensible 164 straight when leading with five minutes left in regulation in 2016. Now the Broncos take aim at another – 24 straight by the Aztecs following a loss when the next game is at home.
“I hate seeing that, especially this time of year and especially with what’s coming down the pipe ,” Boise State coach Leon Rice said in a post-game radio interview. “It’s gonna have to be next man up. It’s gonna have to be, find a way. We’ll solve that problem as we go forward.” Of bigger concern, however, might be his own team. It was humming along, trending upward, playing its best basketball of the season both from an analytics and eye-test standpoint … and then lost against a Nevada team it had led by 22 points three weeks earlier at Viejas Arena.
“We’re better offensively but not as good defensively,” Dutcher said. “But that’s basketball. That’s how it works sometimes. We’re happy with our growth offensively, but we have to get back to being the Aztec defensive team we know we can be.”
