Alabama struggled offensively for much of Wednesday night.
Yet the Crimson Tide survived when it mattered, and made a run even after a skirmish led to a long delay and a trio of ejections at Coleman Coliseum.
No. 2 Alabama, after trailing by as many as 17 points, mounted a massive run late in the second half and surged ahead in overtime to beat Auburn 90-85 in Tuscaloosa. That officially clinched the SEC regular season title for Alabama for the second time in three seasons. Alabama started slowly chipping away at the Tigers’ lead midway through the second half despite its offense struggling for much of the day. The Crimson Tide even opened the game on the wrong side of a 10-2 run that spanned more than five minutes.
That huge 16-0 run that got them back in it, however, was stopped in the middle after a brief altercation down underneath the Auburn basket. Alabama’s Jahvon Quinerly and Auburn’s Wendell Green Jr. briefly got into it after fighting for a rebound, which was ruled Alabama’s after the play went out of bounds. The game was due for a timeout at that point, too, so Alabama staff started setting up chairs on the court and players ran out to celebrate and get ready for the huddle.
As they did, though, they noticed the growing altercation at the other end — which prompted several players to start running down to get involved.
