AUSTIN — Texas tumbled into a familiar pit Saturday night. That didn’t exactly make its situation feel any more comfortable, but at least it wasn’t alien.
Texas downed Texas Tech 72-70 in front of 11,313 fans, successfully completing the halftime comeback for the second time this week. The Longhorns flipped a 9-point deficit into a 7-point lead, surviving a flurry of difficult shots down the stretch to improve to 9-1 under interim head coach Rodney Terry.
Texas Tech wasn’t incinerating the nets, either. But it at least seemed to have a plan on offense, targeting Texas’ lack of interior size with 6-foot-11 senior Fardaws Aimaq, the Utah State transfer and former Western Athletic Conference player of the year who made his season debut Saturday night after recovering from a foot injury.
Still, the Longhorns’ offense was in disarray at intermission. They’d shot just 9-of-26 from the field and a woeful 2-of-13 from 3. Tech gorged itself on the easier stuff, putting up 18 points in the paint and 11 off turnovers.
