Despite failing to pay salaries Nketoana Local Municipality mayor Mamiki Mokoena is reportedly renting a car on a monthly basis from Avis.
reported that the allegations surfaced after Mokoena damaged a BMW 4 Series purchased by the municipality in an accident in 2021. Surprisingly, the car’s log books were not kept.
Surprisingly, since February this year, Mokoena has been using a Toyota Fortuner rented monthly from Avis. In 2023, the ANC in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region called for Mokoena’s suspension. She was accused of failing to present annual reports and hiring outside the secured budget.the mayor had advertised vacancies for a driver at R233 293 and a personal secretary at R280 099 after she purchased a new vehicle., 34, applied for a job as a municipal manager. Unfortunately, his decision to forge his qualifications ultimately earned him a visit from the Hawks.
DA councillor in the municipality Anelia Smit said the root cause of this issue stems from the South African Revenue Service directly recovering R2 622 867 from Nketoana on 29 January for overdue payments, leading to delayed salary payments in January 2024.
