A Cyberscout representative who answered the line Tuesday, its second day of operation, said The Jersey Journal’s call was the first she had received regarding the NJCU breach.
New Jersey City University acknowledged a massive data breachCyberscout, a division of the credit reporting bureau Transunion, is staffing a toll-free line, 531-1135, for calls from students, staff and others whose personal and financial information was stolen in early June by the ransomware hacker Rhysida.
The school’s computer network was hacked between June 4 and June 10, and the Rhysida group, who cybersecurity experts say targets educational institutions, demanded 10 Bitcoin, or approximately $700,000, or the information would be sold. The cybersecurity specialists told The Jersey Journal that the person or group who accessed the hijacked information may contact individual victims and demand a ransom.
“Individuals may also contact the call center to confirm whether they may be potentially affected, and an identity monitoring code will be provided as appropriate,” the school said on its alert page.
