Stalled contract talks with NJ Transit have prompted the locomotive engineers union to take their issues to commuters with billboards and leaflets.
, buying billboard space near train stations and the state capital in Trenton and passing out fliers to commuters at train stations.
“We intend to make this an election issue,” said Eddie Hall, national president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union. “Voters should know if their elected leaders back NJT, prioritizing penthouse views over train crews.” The union is the last of 15 rail unions to reach a new contract with NJ Transit since the old one expired in 2019. Theif a contract can’t be reached after going through negotiation and mediation processes under the federal Railway Labor Act.
The union argues that because of the highly-specialized training and skills required of engineers, they should be paid comparable to what engineers on other commuter railroads are paid.
