The bigger threat to abortion rights in New Jersey is money.

In order to win the votes for passage, sponsors had to sacrifice measures ensuring that all poor women have this right too. Our state uses its own funds to cover abortions for Medicaid beneficiaries, yet some low-income patients are still unable to pay for the procedure, which can cost $550 or more.. For 10 years, this charity run by volunteers has worked with clinics to help bridge the gap of what a woman can afford and the cost of care with small grants.

“Part of the challenge is, most people don’t know they don’t have comprehensive coverage until they are actually at the moment of needing care,” said Roxanne Sutocky of the Women’s Centers, which operates five abortion facilities in four states, including one in Cherry Hill. Sometimes a woman does manage to save up for the procedure, but by the time she’s scraped the money together, she’s further along in the pregnancy, the cost is higher and the cycle only continues, says Casey Olesko, who serves as a board member with NJAAF. The idea is to ensure that all women can get early, affordable abortions.

But this band-aid solution remains a challenge, particularly in the covid era, because it relies on the charitable giving of others. “What we’ve seen through the pandemic is the amount of money that people need is increasing,” Sutocky notes. “More patients are finding their resource networks are tapped out. The friends they usually go to, to borrow $100, are out of work. For those who don’t have insurance, many lost their jobs because of covid.
