An offer will be submitted to Audi parent Volkswagen Group by 23 September
Chinese electric car maker Nio has emerged as a possible buyer of Audi’s Brussels plant in Belgium, as it looks to avoid costly European Union import tariffs. , Belgium newspaper De Tijd reports, citing “reliable sources”. Audi has already confirmed it will no longer produce any new cars at its Vorst, Brussels, factory – which first opened in 1949 – when the last of the current Q8 e-tron SUV model rolls off the production line in 2025.
However, any purchase of the Audi site is expected to come with stipulations regarding job guarantees for its 2910 employees. Nio began selling its electric models in selected European markets in 2021. However, sales volumes and market penetration remain limited. Nio models sold in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark include the ET5, ET5 Touring, EL6, EL7, ET7 and EL8.
