Nintendo's Switch 2 Needs These Sequels
NintendoSwitch 2Sequels

With the Switch 2's impressive launch and a focus on cutting-edge titles, this article highlights ten highly anticipated sequels that Nintendo should prioritize, including new entries in the Pokémon: Let's Go and Kid Icarus series to further solidify the console's legacy.

Nintendo cannot be stopped. For decades, the developer has stood as one of the video game industry's greatest giants, and its release of the Switch 2 proves Nintendo has still got it. The console's record-breaking debut moved millions of units across the world, and its top titles are at the bleeding edge of technology.

From The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the Switch 2 is loaded with impressive games, but we still want more. To be specific, we want more sequels. Nintendo has a vast catalog under its belt, but some of its best IPs are stuck in some sort of purgatory. Below, we have broken down 10 incredible sequels the Nintendo Switch 2 desperately needs if it wants to do its reputation justice.Nobody expected Pokémon to get a major facelift in 2018, but that is exactly what happened. Despite initial skepticism, the release of Pokémon: Let's Go won over gamers across the globe. Critics were impressed by the game's accessible charm, while fans praised the game for adding important quality-of-life features. And yet, we still have no sequel to Pokémon: Let's Go. Nintendo could fix this oversight easily enough with a Switch 2 release. Pokémon: Let's Go could bring back a number of the series' top regions, such as Johto. It would be a gift to see the region return with the vibrant art that Pokémon: Let's Go made famous. Paired with the franchise's streamlined pacing and unbeatable co-op mode, a new entry is needed for Pokémon: Let's Go ASAP, so we can only hope it comes around. It is hard to believe Kid Icarus made its grand debut 40 years ago. In December 2026, the fantasy series will celebrate its biggest anniversary yet, and there is one way Nintendo can do the franchise justice. Kid Icarus hasn't gotten its own video game since March 2012, so it is beyond time for Nintendo to give Pit & Company a new solo outing. There are plenty of reasons Kid Icarus needs a comeback beyond its impending anniversary. For one, the franchise is criminally overlooked despite its top-tier titles. Kid Icarus: Uprising, the series' most recent entry, was hailed as a masterpiece by fans when it launched. However, the Nintendo 3DS title is difficult to access these days as the console has aged out. Modern audiences deserve a chance to experience Kid Icarus' gorgeous storytelling with a new title, and Nintendo fans sorely miss the franchise's unique blend of gameplay. How has it been 18 years since Wario Land dropped its last game? The math is hard to believe, but the release of Wario Land: Shake It is proof enough. Nintendo has been overlooking one of its most colorful series for years, and the Switch 2 is the perfect place to revive Wario Land at last. Super Mario may be the king of platformers, but Wario Land offers a unique subversion to the genre. Sometimes, you just need to brute force a platformer, and Wario Land gives gamers that space. Known for its unique level designs and a clever immortality feature, Wario Land is prime for the taking, and Nintendo would be foolish to let the IP languish any longer. It is a shame that Nintendo has forgotten its greatest action series. As much as gamers love The Legend of Zelda and Metroid, they have just as much affection for Star Fox. Created in 1993, Star Fox broke the mold at Nintendo with its sci-fi shooting thrills, but the franchise has been on hiatus since 2017. I think we can all agree that break needs to end ASAP. Not only is Star Fox riding a high these days given its inclusion in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but the Switch 2 is powerful enough to do the franchise justice. Star Fox is prime for a new-gen reboot with advanced physics that straddles the line between a flight sim and an on-rail shooter. Nintendo cannot afford to keep Star Fox benched, and the series deserves a shot at redemption in the wake of Star Fox Zero.Nearly 30 years ago, Nintendo took a big risk with Mario that everyone looks back on fondly. The brand worked with Intelligent Systems and AlphaDream to bring Paper Mario to life, a bold RPG take that combines puzzle platforming with turn-based combat. Despite its popularity with fans, Paper Mario has always been somewhat of an afterthought, but Nintendo could fix that reputation with a Switch 2 comeback. In 2020, Paper Mario proved it could make a modern comeback with The Origami King, but the title did just so-so with fans. What gamers wanted was a return to form, and the Switch 2 could bring back the franchise's original badge system. Paper Mario deserves a more regular release schedule, and there is no place better to revisit the series' edgy narrative than the Switch 2.Pokémon is no stranger to gimmicky spin-offs, but sometimes, these games become cult classics. Just look at Pokémon Snap. Released in 1999, the photography-centric video game hit the Nintendo 64 to solid praise, and it went on to become a beloved classic as the years went on. When Pokémon Snap confirmed comeback plans for the Nintendo Switch in 2021, hype hit an all-time high with fans, so imagine the buzz Nintendo would drum up with a Switch 2 sequel? The Switch 2 is the ultimate console for a new Pokémon Snap game, and we have the console's hardware to thank. Nintendo's upgraded SSD would give a new Pokémon Snap game a seamless gameplay loop, bypassing the long load times that have hindered the game for ages. Outside of performance-related quirks, the Switch 2 would be a great place to take the series off rails, so to speak. Pokémon Snap has the potential to go the distance, but it will need an ambitious comeback to break into that future.Nintendo has more Mario games under its belt that die-hard fans care to count. The developer isn't afraid to tout its top mascot in new games. Every new console posted by Nintendo gets its own Mario titles, including a new number of sequels. And for the love of Cappy, it is time for Nintendo to give us a Super Mario Odyssey sequel. Released in 2017, Super Mario Odyssey stands as one of the hero's most enduring titles. The game's originality blew away both fans and critics alike, making it all the more shocking that Nintendo has yet to drop a sequel for the game. If Super Mario Odyssey 2 hit the Switch 2, Nintendo would get new space to push its hardware with 'true' next-gen visuals. There is also plenty of room to expand the game's use of Cappy with new power-ups, and again, the Switch 2 would make an open-world concept possible for the game given its updated specs.Mario may take center stage at Nintendo, but don't go thinking his spotlight casts shade on Luigi. The green plumber is often the butt of jokes when compared to his brother, but Luigi has nothing to prove. The success of Luigi's Mansion IP speaks for itself, and we are definitely overdue for a new entry. Want deeper sequel analysis? If Nintendo wants to take the Switch 2 to the next level, it will bring Luigi's Mansion 4 to the floor before long. After all, the release of Luigi's Mansion 3 in 2019 was met with rave reviews, and it sold better than experts expected. Luigi's Mansion loves to push hardware to the limits, and the Nintendo Switch 2 would allow the series to play with ray tracing and dynamic lighting. The IP is begging for open-world exploration, and Nintendo could not find a better place to deliver such goods than the Switch 2.If there is one franchise Nintendo is all but assured to bring to the Switch 2, it is Fire Emblem. First published on the NES in 1990, the tactical RPG blends the best of fantasy with simulation. Recent releases like Fire Emblem: Three Houses proved the franchise could hang with modern players, so it is time for the Switch 2 to take a swing at the best-selling series. Nintendo's current console is not only capable of expanding Fire Emblem's tactical scope with bigger maps, but it will make those visuals super crisp. The hardware upgrade between the Switch and Switch 2 cannot be overstated enough when it comes to tactical titles like Fire Emblem. So hopefully, Nintendo will not make us wait long for this series' inevitable sequel. When you look at a company as revered as Nintendo, perfection is a high bar to reach. There are few games in this world players would call perfect, but against all odds, Super Mario Galaxy is one of them. Released in 2007, the bold platformer completely reimagined what Mario could be when it landed on the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy 2 pushed boundaries in the same way with its debut three years later, and now, it is time for the Switch 2 to take the IP into a new era. Following the game's comeuppance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo is primed to revisit the series ASAP. It has been 16 years since fans got to revisit Super Mario Galaxy, and the masterful series could use a visual upgrade. The Switch 2 could provide that fidelity to Mario with ease, and its hardware was born to expand Super Mario Galaxy's gravity-defying thrills. It is time Nintendo delivered the goods, so here's to hoping plans are underway behind the scenes for a Super Mario Galaxy comeback.
