For the first time since 1989, the company will not have a separate home and portable console on offer.
While the company has ceased production of the devices, Nintendo says that games for the 3DS family of systems will continue to be available on the Nintendo eShop and at retail.
As of June 30, the 3DS had sold 75.9 million units worldwide, compared to 154 million units sold by its predecessor the Nintendo DS family. Nintendo Switch, which is the Japanese company’s primary console on the market, touts its hybrid design as a key selling point allowing for both handheld gaming on the go and gaming on a TV.
The 3DS’ demise may have been prompted by the arrival of the cheaper and handheld-only Switch Lite last year which has seen a sharp spike in sales.in the quarter ending on June 30th and more than double the number of devices it sold within the same period in 2019. 3DS sales however continued to decline steeply with the devices showing a 73% decrease in sales compared to the prior financial year. The 3DS launched in March 2011 offering glasses-free 3D as a key selling point initially.
