October will see a series of big changes affecting benefit payments, energy bills and fast food outlets come into force.
Single-use plastic ban - October 1 Takeaways will no longer be able to serve food with certain items including plastic cutlery and polystyrene cups. It comes as ministers hope the move will help better protect the environment. New visa fees - October 4 The UK government announced on 15 September 2023 that immigration fees will increase from 4 October 2023. Visa application fees for students applying from overseas are set to increase the most, with both Student and Child Student visas set to increase to £490 per applicant, up 35% from the current fee of £363.
Self-assessment register deadline - October 5 If you've never submitted a self-assessment tax return before, you must register with HM Revenue and Customs by October 5. You must tell them if you need to complete a tax return and have not sent one before, by registering for Self Assessment via the government website.Inflation - October 18 The Office for National Statistics will release the inflation rate for the 12 months to September on October 18.
