The defendants, who were remanded in custody, were told they could face 'immediate custody'
Nine men will today learn their fate as they appear to be sentenced for their roles in the violent disorder outside the Suites Hotel last year.
Jones and Shelley pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court in July 2023, while the other three men pleaded guilty at magistrates' court at an earlier date. All appeared before the court for sentencing on Friday apart from Shelley, with Judge Denis Watson KC issuing a bench warrant for his arrest. Judge Watson previously said all options, including immediate custody, were open to him when it came to sentencing.
"Because of the escalating crowds and level of violence, they put on their protective gear. At this point in the evening, officers were bombarded with various missiles, for example rocks and bottles. There was an officer injured by a concrete slab. The crown would submit that fireworks were being directed towards the police."
A number of pieces of footage were shone to the court which showed some of the defendants' roles in the disorder. The sentencing heard on Friday that Cullen could be clearly seen throwing missiles at police officers while Shelley shouted he would "burn the hotel to the ground and smash their f***ing heads in".
Cullen's defence argued he was remorseful and had admitted his role in the magistrates' court while Boynton, who has a three-year-old daughter expressed "regret and embarrassment". Jones' defence said he is a former veteran with "significant issues with his mental health" while McPadden's said he didn’t use violence, carry a weapon, cause any damage or throw a missile.
