Nine bid pushes AFL broadcast rights into record territory | By Jake Niall and Colin Kruger agerealfooty afl

, regardless of the outcome the AFL could receive up to $50 million per year more than its existing deal, which would come to $3.12 billion over six years or $3.64m over seven years.Paramount and Foxtel representatives were at AFL headquarters on Monday for the silent bid process, while Seven made a bid remotely. Discussions between the bidders and the AFL were still taking place on Monday evening.

The strong competition for the AFL rights will have a knock-on effect for other sports, such as cricket and tennis, which are expected to enter negotiations this year. Seven is preparing to fight Cricket Australia in court over the terms of their existing broadcast deal . Industry insiders say that the AFL is viewed as a greater priority for Seven and Foxtel than the cricket, given its capacity to drive subscriptions for pay and audience on free to air.

Nine, Foxtel, Seven and the AFL declined to comment. Paramount, the owner of Network Ten, has also been contacted.
