Nimona review: this new animated Netflix movie is a disruptive marvel
Based on the award-winning graphic novel by ND Stevenson and directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane with Annapurna Pictures producing, the story is set in a fascinating fantasy world where medieval aesthetics collide with futuristic landscapes, where armour is as popular as flying cars and swords are used like laser guns.
At the heart of this high-tech society, a long-standing knightly tradition has survived for over a thousand years to protect its people from harm. Wherever that might come from.The story follows Ballister Boldheart , a one-of-a-kind warrior since he is a commoner who was unexpectedly chosen by Queen Valerin to become a knight trainee at the prestigious Institute, despite lacking noble blood.
Apparently, that’s not an ideal outcome for some. While being knighted in a highly public event, Ballister finds out too late he's been set up and in a matter of seconds he's accused of murder, becoming the most wanted man in the realm. Not even his lover, the popular knight Ambrosius Goldenloin , is willing to believe him. In fact, he chops off Ballister’s arm, no questions asked.Somewhere in the city, a rebellious shape-shifter called Nimona watches the moment on TV and realises Ballister might be a kindred spirit. She desperately wants to be his sidekick, because every villain needs a sidekick, of course. Although what the knight needs right now is a friend.
As they find refuge outside the city, Ballister grows more skeptical of this apparently ideal society while Nimona shows him what it means to be proud of being different, and how to own the isolation that comes with it. They become partners and eventually friends, as they have to decide if they want to embrace the evil identity the public have imposed on them, or if fighting for their place in society is worth it, after all.
