The Backrooms can be found in Nightwing's psyche.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Nightwing has often been held as the "modern" face of DC Comics, especially after the critical success of the character's current title. This role has never more been true than when Dick Grayson is confronted with Insomnia and his own nightmares: plunged into sleep and terror, Nightwing's greatest fears tap into the zeitgeist of internet horror, referencing the creepypasta sensation of "The Backrooms.
In Knight Terrors: Nightwing #2 by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott, Nightwing tries to rescue Batgirl Barbara Gordon from the nightmare Arkham Asylum that haunts him. Escaping into the "Back Rooms of Arkham," he manages to find and repair a damaged Barbara.
Together with the other Batgirls, they are all able to break free of the nightmare before it is able to transform Nightwing into the monster he fears himself to be.
It is a treat to see these elements explored in traditional superhero comics, and Nightwing is arguably the perfect vehicle with which to do so. Nightwing has always been the representative of the next generation , both open to new experiences and rejecting many of the assumed truisms of his teachers. While this makes him an open and compassionate hero, it also means that he is one of DC's go-to figures for tapping into the cultural zeitgeist.
Internet horror has always been a tricky venue to explore in other mediums, as the "story-by-collective" design makes it difficult to track copyright and ownership; as such, it's a welcome surprise to see such modern horrors haunting Nightwing's nightmare version of Arkham. Doing so allows DC to explore untapped channels, and it allows Nightwing to stay fresh and modern for general readers and horror fans alike.
