Original A Nightmare on Elm Street actor Heather Langenkamp reveals one detail Wes Craven got surprisingly right in the horror classic's script.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp reveals the one detail Wes Craven got surprisingly right in the classic horror movie’s script. Craven was responsible for some of the most memorable exploitation films of the 1970s, but he took a step up in class with 1984’s imaginative supernatural slasher movie starring iconic movie monster Freddy Krueger.

Called upon recently to reflect upon her career-making time as Nancy in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, Langenkamp spoke in particular about Craven, and revealed the one thing she says he got surprisingly right in his script for the horror classic. Appearing on Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum, Langenkamp discussed Craven’s facility with language, and his particular ear for the way teenagers talk.

Wes wrote such a great script. I don’t know how he had this ability, but he was probably 40 at the time when he did Nightmare on Elm Street, but he just had this way of getting the lingo, and the way that kids talk to each other. It wasn’t perfect, because there were some lines, I remember we rolled our eyes like, “Oh come on Wes, kids don't talk this way.” But in general there was this casual back and forth. It was really great. That's why he was such a good writer.

Craven Got Everything Right On A Nightmare On Elm Street Craven largely nailing the way teenagers talk in his Nightmare on Elm Street script is just one way he did everything right on his seminal horror masterpiece. The film’s premise of a supernatural killer terrorizing kids in their dreams, and then in the real world, is of course a perfect slasher set-up. The way Freddy Krueger is conceived is equally brilliant, right down to his psychologically jarring red-and-green sweater.

The casting of Englund was indeed a home run for Craven and for horror movie history, as it gave genre fans a new screen icon to rival Boris Karloff and Vincent Price. Equally effective was the casting of the kids, from Langenkamp as Nancy, to future superstar Johnny Depp as the doomed heartthrob Glen.
