A police manhunt was launched
It was shortly after midnight on February 17, 1972, when Dr Ahmed Alami forced his way on to the children's ward at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and demanded sleeping tablets.
Dr Alami had high credentials. The son of Jerusalem's leading Islamic cleric, the Mufti of Jerusalem, he served with the Jordanian army in the medical corps until his discharge in 1970. Determined to keep up with his medical career, he moved to England and worked at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London before moving to Blackpool two months later.
After carrying out the horrific crimes, Dr Alami fled the scene, and a manhunt was launched by Lancashire Police. The police team, including tracker dogs, began a methodical search of the grounds for the murder weapon and inquiries swung into action to track down the killer. During an 18 minute hearing at Lancaster Crown Court, the doctor, dressed in a fawn suit, orange shirt and red tie, nodded only to confirm his name. Mr Justice Cantley told the jury: "There are certain persons whom it is not possible to try. It does not mean they are allowed to remain at liberty but they can not be tried as they can not be properly and fairly tried.
